New parking area for Wisconsin MATES takes shape at Fort McCoy
The project, located in the cantonment area near the 200 block, will provide MATES with a new location to park hundreds of pieces of military equipment. The project is intended to address a safety concern with the existing MATES equipment parking area, which is located within the surface danger zone of Range 29.
MATES is a Wisconsin Army National Guard tenant organization at Fort McCoy that supports equipment readiness and maintenance for Wisconsin Guard units. The facility was established at Fort McCoy in 1949 with construction of a four-bay maintenance building and has undergone numerous expansions and improvements during the decades since.
Fort McCoy DPW officials said the existing equipment parking area will eventually be restored to a natural area after equipment is moved to the new site. The new parking area is designed to provide MATES with a safer, more suitable location for its equipment while also resolving the range-safety conflict.
Work on the new parking area was well underway in April 2026, when contractors were completing site and paving work.
As construction continues, the project represents another infrastructure improvement at Fort McCoy that supports Wisconsin Army National Guard readiness and the installation’s mission to provide training and support for military forces.
Fort McCoy has supported America’s armed forces since 1909. Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin.
The post’s varied terrain, state-of-the-art ranges, new as well as renovated facilities, and extensive support infrastructure combine to provide military personnel with an environment in which to develop and sustain the skills necessary for mission success.
The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services nearly every year since 1984.
